One major advantage of living in Melbourne is we have a public holiday (bank holiday) just for a horse racing :) . It’s known as a Melbourne Cup day where ‘the nation stops’. It’s held in late October/early November just in time for Spring.

During the week leading off to Melbourne Cup Day, there are numerous racing days that you can attend. This is the day where you are allowed to drink champagne at 10 o’clock  in the morning and gamble at the same time. Heaven :) !

Women save their best dress to wear on this day, guess this is as close as splurging large amount of cash in one day as their wedding day!

The horse that wins the Caulfield Cup is usually favourite for the Melbourne Cup. The Caulfied Cup is a major horse racing championship prior to Melbourne Cup.

Prior to Melbourne Cup Day you have several racing days that you can attend:

  • Derby Day – this is known to be the black/white dress affair day
  • Oaks Day – It’s ‘Ladies’ Day. Great for the ladies to show off colours and fashion style. They can compete in the best dressed competition. It’s also great for the guys to do ‘chicks’ surfing as they look immaculate and tend to be drunk by midday :) .
  • Stakes Day – This is the ‘family’ day

Typical day outings involves having picnic and lots of alcohols either at your corporate or sponsored marquees (by invitations only by those companies) or at the lawns or car park booth.

Next time when you’re in the neighbourhood, make sure you come, dress from head to toe, have champagnes in one hand and gamble your cash away with the other!
