Is it smart to ban TV from children?

A colleague recently told me that he and his wife does not own a TV and intend to bring up their future kids without one. I think this is a very stupid idea because whilst I agree children of today watch way too much television, to totally ban it would mean risking being socially crippled.
Remembering my childhood, I grew up with cultures from TV. Socially at school, I would talk about what’s on TV including the latest toys, runners, new cereals shown on the ads or just simply the TV shows themselves. One particular kid would have trouble bonding with other kids at school because when their friends were talking about stuff on TV, the kid would have no clue. They will be isolated by other kids and being seen as ‘weirdos’.

I agree with you, Mai, about the social deprivation and isolation that can happen…Keep in mind also that an engaged parent is also the best “filter” for anything that is viewed, whether you are talking about TV or XXX “smut” on the ‘net, or something like 9/11 on the news.
