Sunset at Uluru

On my recent trip to the NT I couldn’t wait to see Uluru. Uluru (Ayers Rock)  is located in the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park where you can get a 3 days pass which gives you access to Uluru and Kata Tjuta. Uluru is the largest monolithic rock in the world and I have heard so much about  it. An Australian icon, I was very excited and couldn’t wait to see it.

The question people want to know most is if you are allowed to climb Uluru. The short answer is yes but they prefer you don’t. They as the rangers and the Aboriginal people who owns the land. So why do they still allow the climb? It’s all about tourism. Authorities believe that closing the climb will drastically reduce tourism numbers. I decided not to climb the sacred rock.

Uluru is a good 4 hour drive from Alice Springs or if you are staying at the Voyages Uluru Resort it only a 20 minute drive.

I decided that the base walk around Uluru would be the best way to enjoy the spectucular views of Uluru. The walk is around 9.4km and about 3.5 hours.

While driving towards the rock and during the walk around it you really cannot believe the sheer size of it. It is HUGE. Taller than the Eiffel Tower, and is really something that must be seen the believe.

The colour around Uluru is very interesting. It is very unique. Uluru’s horizon changes colour as the sun moves. The color of the rock can range from red, fiery red to violet. It is quite fascinating.

Just a word of warning, if you are tempted to take a piece of the rock as a souvenir, don’t. If you go to the cultural centre there is a guest book full of people apologising after complaining about the back luck they have had since taking the rock. Don’t do it my friends.

Also make sure you visit both sunset and sunrise. It really is spectacular seeing it change color right before your eyes.
