Giant Termite Mounds - took the little termites 50 years to build this concrete-hard mound
So today we are heading to Litchfield National Park, it is located approximately 115km south of Darwin. Litchfield National Park is known for its mind boggling termite mounds, 4WDs and spectacular waterfalls.
First stop was the termite mound then the waterfalls.
Here are some of the sights I visited:
- Magnetic Termite Mounds - These structural mounds are built by termites and some are as high as 4.5 - 6 metres (15-20 feet). I was truly gobsmacked by the sheer size of the mounds. Who knew termite mounds grew this tall? Apparently some of these mounds have taken the termites over 50 years to build. You know when you see something this tall, you can’t help but try to push it down, so I tried, little did I realise these mounds were concrete hard! Seriously the Eiffel Tower and Learning Tower of Pisa has nothing on these mounds. Definetly a must see!
- Buley Rockhole - This is a very popular swim holes famous for its cascading pools.
- Florence Falls - Walking around the creek took me to the Florense Falls. Here I decided to take a dip in the warm waters. I swam with the resident fish and enjoyed the strong rushing gushes of the waterfalls. While the swim here was good you should wait till Wangi Falls.
- Tolmer Falls - you cannot get close to the falls but still be able to get a view and enjoy the amazing Tolmer Falls.
- Wangi Falls - The most popular falls at Litchfield National Park. If you don’t have time forget the other 3, this is the waterfall you want to be at. It is seriously the best place for a nice beautiful swim in the blazing sun against the backdrop of a serene waterfall. Kiost, showers, toilets, bbqs are all provided.
