Il Bacaro (Italian) Restaurant Review – Fine Dining

I took some customers out for dinner last night to one of my favourite restaurants :

Il Bacaro (Phone +61 3 9654 6778)
168 Little Collins St, Melbourne – Victoria 3000, Australia

Il Bacaro is a quaint dimmed Italian Restaurant with fantastic Italian food and Australian/New Zealand wine. It is hidden in a little alleyway (very typical of Melbourne restaurants) where only the locals would know.

Il Bacaro is a great place to take someone who you want to impress whether they are customers/clients or a date. What I like about this restaurant, other than the great food and wine, is the way they seat you. If you are a couple, they’d sit you side by side instead of facing each other thus you can make the most of cuddling each other during dinner :) .

Having said all that, enjoying Il Bacaro does not have to be a group affair. After a long day of work, I sometimes enjoy a quiet dinner by myself siting in the bar area. This way I get to watch other couples around me and concentrate on my food.

Here are my typical feasting at Il Bacaro either by myself or with others:

  • On arrival, I order a glass of sparkling wine  – you get a choice of Australian Sparkling wine, Italian Sparkling wine or French Champagne
  • I order my entree. My favourites are lightly battered calamari or off the menu Bruschetta topped with tomatoes and basils.
Last night I went for the specials - Crispytoasted Bruschetta topped with duck liver pate, fig jam and rocket/arugula leaves

  • I have a glass of Australian or New Zealand wine.
  • I order my main. My favourite is either duck breast AU$38 (US$25) or Moreton Bay Bugs Spaghettini (Entree size AU$28/US$18 or Main AU$32/US$21). Moreton Bay Bugs are bay bugs – a cross between crabs and lobsters that are caught in Moreton Bay (east northern coast of Australia). They serve it with spaghettini (thin spaghetti) with white wine, olive oil and a hint of chilli. I usually order entree size.
My last night main - Entree/Starter size Moreton Bay Bugs on Spaghettini cooked with white wine, olive oil, and a hint of chilli

  • For dessert – most of the times I skip dessert but if I’m up for it, I order an affogato (a scoop of vanilla ice cream on espresso) which is not on the menu. However, Il Bacaro has a wide selections of really nice desserts such as panacota, etc

In comparison with London restaurants, Melboune is spoilt with excellent food and fine dining that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg an. Also you don’t have to wait months to get a reservations.

Fine food and wine should not only be affordable for the privilege and pretentious, which is why I love living and settling back in Melbourne after having travelled and lived around the world.
