I would consider Ying Thai to fall under the “Melbourne Cheap Eats” category since mains cost around AU$10 (US$6.5) – AU$20 (US$13) which are considered to be cheap when you’re looking for good value and tasty dinner.
Ying Thai 2 is located on Lygon street, Melbourne, which is unusual since when you think Lygon street you think of Italian restaurants. Ying Thai 2 always seem be full but if there’s only 2 or 3 of you a booking isn’t usually required.
Here is what I ordered:
- Ice Milk Tea AU$3.5 (US$2.5)

Ice Milk Tea Thai Style(black tea and condensed milk serve with ice)
- Deep Fried Chicken AU$9.5 (US$6.30)

There are 5 pieces of chicken but we ate the other 2 ;p
- Coconut Rice - A very fragrant sweet and salty creamy coconut rice with a hint of lemongrass

Fragrant Coconut Rice with a hint of lemongrass pieces
- Stir Fry Duck with basil AU$13.50 (US$8.9)

Stir Fry Duck with basil and red pepper
- Seafood Pad Thai AU$14.50 (US$9.50)

Seafood Pad thai - Hot and Spicy stir fry rice noodles with seafood (prawns, mussels, squids) topped with crunched peanuts
You can substitute Pad Thai with chicken or beef. My other favourite dish is Green Papaya salad, Grilled chicken mixed with spices wrapped in Pandan Leaves, Satays and of course Thai Fish Cakes (served with spicy peanut sauce).
Including drinks, each person spends about AU$15 (US$9.90). This is a bargain, especially for a kick ass meal like Ying Thai!
