Sunday’s usually a lazy day for me where I do absolutely nothing. I enjoy cooking so this can be counted as ‘doing nothing’ :) . Today I made yakitori chicken (Japanese Grilled Chicken on skewers).

Mai's Yakitori Chicken

Mai's Yakitori Chicken

Here are the ingredients:

  • Bamboo skewers
  • 2 boneless chicken thighs fillet
  • A bunch of spring onions
  • 2/3 cup of soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 5 teaspoons of dry white wine (you can use mirin or chinese cooking wine)
  • 1 tablespoon flour

how to make it:

  • Soak the bamboo skewers on water for several hours (so they do not burn when you cook)
  • To make the sauce – Mix in a bowl – soy sauce, sugar, dry white wine and plain flour.
  • Cut the chicken thigh into small bite size cube
  • Marinate the chicken for 2-3 hours in the sauce (or overnight like I did with mine).
  • Cut spring onions into approximately 3 cm  (1 1/4 inch) long piece
  • Thread the chicken and spring onions alternately on the bamboo skewers (approximately 3 spring onions and 2 chicken cubes per skewer)
  • Either grill, BBQ  or pan fried the chicken skewers and basing them regularly with the sauce until cooked (turn the chicken halfway so they cook on either side)
  • Serve hot.

For vegetarians, you can substitute the chicken with Tofu. They are as tasty as the chicken version.

Bon Apetite!
