New energy drink - Smart Energy Blood Orange & Chilli from Spring Valley

So I’m a sucker for energy drinks. I’ve tried just about every single one, from the time I was a student at RMIT till now (8 years?). In Australia, we have lots of different brand of energy drinks. Ranging from my favourite, V to the very popular Red Bull which taste like bubble gum. Many has come and gone, the latest being the old Mother, Mother 1 (I actually preferred the old Mother to the new one, which taste very similar to Red Bull)

Being a regular energy drink drinker, today I saw something new. It’s a new energy drink by Spring Valley, “smart energy TM” which is well known for its fruit juices.

It comes in 3 flavours. After thinking for a while I tried the Blood Orange & Chilli. Cost was $3, same as for a V. It tasted ok. I looked at the ingredients and strangely enough it doesn’t contain any chilli. The first sip was nice and refreshing, the chilli taste comes out about 3 seconds later, which I liked (big big fan of chilli :) However after about 20 seconds the chilli taste turnsĀ  acidly. It won’t go away.

hmmmm, I think I’m going to be sticking to my V energy drinks, nice try Spring Valley but like Mother I don’t see it lasting.

If anyone has tried the other flavours, please let me know what you think.

UPDATE: Ok since you’ve asked I’ve now tried the Citrus flavoured drink. The citrus flavour is definetely an improvement. It’s similar to RedBull but with more of a tangy taste. I think I like it, though it’s too soft drinkie for me, as appose to an energy drink. Still prefer my V :)

We just got these in where I work (Coles in Tassie), I think they’re $2.73 (20c more than a V) - Have you tried the Blueberry one yet?

I don’t like Red Bull either because of its bubblegum-like taste.

No have not tried the Blueberry but will definitely try it. Have you tried it? I have to say $2.73 is quite pricey for Coles supermarket. I think $2.50 is about the right price. $3.00 is just too pricey

    Hey everyone,
I am now addicted to this stuff. I get it from my local I.G.A. I havent seen it anywhere else, but Blueberry is the only one I like. Hopefully they put it out in 4 or 6 packs soon so its cheaper.

    Hi Cate,

I agree the Citrus flavor is the best of the 3, though I also like the Berry, I have been drinking them with my Vs. As to which is better for you, I have done some research and it seems Red Bull has the lowest calories to my suprise. Here are the results.

    Nutritional Information

    Red Bull
    Calories 110
    sugar 27gm

    Smart Energy
    120 calories
    sugar 28.3

    V Enery drink
    114 calories
    sugar 26.5

    Blueberry is really nice.
You can get smart energy drinks for $2 each at 7 Eleven.

Hello fellow energy drinker! In terms of effect, Red Bull by far beats them all in terms of overall effect. Value for money would be Mother due to its overall size, V gives you a light kick and taste better, But you can buy Pack of 4 Red Bull for $9.99 at any supermarket so its not as expensive out in pubs/clubs (costing up to $5+!!).

    btw..nice blog =)
