If you are looking for a tasty and affordable dinner around Melbourne then I’d recommend that you to head off to Sung’s kitchen. I would have to say that Sung’s Kitchen is on the limit of categorising it under cheap eats because in every way, it’s decor, staff, service, food, it is top notch and on the brink of fine dining.
Sung’s Kitchen serves modern twist of chinese food. The decor and ambience of the restaurant is very modern and not your typical chinese restaurant. It has a similar concept as Idea Fine Food and Wine Restaurant without the price tag
.
I would recommend you have their daily special tea as it is one of their speciality. In the past, I’ve enjoyed some of their unique tea offerings such as their Osmanthus Oolong tea. They also have lovely and tasty desserts (modern take on the traditional chinese dessert and more).
Here are some of their speciality dishes that I shared with 5 of my other mates which we ended up spending only AU$24.50 per person including tips (Bargain
!):
- Glass Noodle Salad – very refreshing

A perfect starter - Glass Noodle Salad with peanut sauce and a dash of sesame oil served with fresh thin strips of cucumber
- Pan fried Shanghai dumplings - minced pork wrapped in crispy dumpling skins

Another perfect starter - pan fried Shanghai dumplings
- Ministry Chicken Ribs – Sung’s Kitchen speciality dish of crispy chicken ribs served with spicy sweet and sour sauce

Ministry Spicy Chicken Ribs - I always get this everytime I dine at Sung's kitchen
- Seafood stir fry with vegetables and mushrooms

Mixed seafood of fresh scallops, fish, prawns, squids, peas and mushrooms cooked in ginger and garlic sauce
- Crispy fried salt and pepper calamari

Salt and pepper crispy fried calamaris served with spring onions, chilli pieces, crispy rice noodles
- Steamed fish fillet

Juicy fresh tender fish pieces, cooked for perfection
-
Fried Thread roll/bun

- Fried thread bun/roll – chinese sweet bun with crispy outer texture and soft/fluffy buns served with condensed milk sauce on the side
- Another Sung’s kitchen Speciality – freshly squeezed Mango Juice

Fresh Mango Juice

Hi Mai Lin, I’m trying to find out if Sung’s Kitchen do yum cha on the weekends. I heard that they might. Did you see any signs, menus….etc. that suggested that they do?
Cheers!
Hi TooYum,
Sung’s kitchen does Yum Cha. I’ve been once – You order off the menu. I love having dinner there but for Yum Cha, I prefer the traditional ordering off the cart rather than the menu. Price’s a bit dearer as well than your traditional Yum Cha at normal chinese restaurant. Hope this helps
Thanks Mai! That helps heaps.
I will def try out Sung’s for dinner the next time I’m in Melbourne.
Cheers!
Sung’s Kitchen is first stop on any trip to Melbourne, in fact i’m looking forward to a visit tomorrow!
Thanks Scott, I’m green with envy! Hope you have a great night
Hi Mai. I totally agree with your review, I have been to Sung’s a number of times and it is quite popular with my work colleagues — the lunchtime specials a la carte are excellent value.
Hi,
Thanks for letting me know about their lunchtime specials. I haven’t been there for lunch except for a couple of times for yum cha. While their yum cha was good I definetely prefer the tradional trolley strolling yum chas. Will pop in next time for a proper lunch
Hi,
So far, you all missed the chilli crab, i think that is the best dish and that the reson we keep going to dine there.
Thanks Jackie, will certainly check chilli crab. x Mai
