How to Set Up your iPhone 3GS

I have just recieved my iphone 3GS 16GB and after hearing from friends about how it was impossible to get one I felt privilliged indeed. Although I prefer to the 32GB version, I didn’t have choice as it is afterall a phone from work.
I love iPhone the fact that it is a phone, organiser, web browser, email, portable game device (similar to nintendo ds/playstation portable psp), ipod (mp3 player), satelite navigation, and digital camera ALL IN ONE! On top of that, I like the fact that there are lots of useful applications. Some that I adore such as stockwatch to manage your shares portfolio and tram tracker (live tram timetable).
I don’t really know what I will do without my iphone.
My only gripe with the iPhone is setting up the dam thing. Like seriously, you think if they can build something so beautiful that’d be able to come up with a decent setup guide, not so, so here is some tips to set up your iphone.
If you have just started getting your iphone, here are some tips to get you online FAST:
1. How to put your SIM card
in your box, there’s a little foldable cardbox where you can find a quick start guide/manual. Right in the middle, there’s this silver/metal tip that you can insert on top of your iPhone to trigger the SIM card tray out (See picture below).

SIM card slot which needs to be triggered by this silver/metal tool
2. How to start setting up the iPhone
Before you can start singing and dancing with your iPhone, connect your iPhone to your computer (via USB cable given). Once connected, if you have iTunes, you just follow the steps. If you don’t have iTunes, you can download iTunes to your computer then follow the steps to set up such as naming your iphone, set up synchronisation mode for musics, email, folders, etc
3. Restart your iPhone
Once you finish with the iTunes setup, detach it from your computer and re-start your iPhone (on and off button on top of iPhone). Your iPhone should be able to pick up the relevant network.
4. What happen if it still does not work?
Check if you have the right SIM Card. Your SIM card should be the special 3G SIM card used for 3G network. Some people who upgrades to iPhone from their normal GSM, just use the same SIM Card to use with iPhone which is on 3G network. If you are using your old SIM card which is not ‘3G’ friendly, go back to the shop where you get your iPhone. They’ll give you the correct SIM card then repeat the above steps.
5. If you are in the wireless internet at home, office or hot spots, make sure you make use of it.
Why use your data allowance when you have a wireless broadband at home/friends house/office, etc. So make sure you connect to available Wi-Fi networks which you have access/password to:
- In your iPhone desktop, click on Settings
- Click on Wi-Fi
- Select the one you’d like to connect - and enter password (if required)
I have been using my iphone instead of my laptop computer lately anywhere in my house by connecting to my home wireless internet modem :). This also applies in the office and at airport lounges (e.g. Qantas). Only when I’m out and about then I use my data network from my phone provider. This ensure I don’t go beyond data allowances.
6. Download applications to your iPhone
You can download free or purchased/free applications such as Games, Tram Tracker, Stockwatch, etc by connecting your iPhone to your computer. Download application via iTunes. Then all you need to do is click the Sync button on the iTunes (located on bottom right hand corner). All your downloaded applications would be installed in your iPhone.
