Tonight I watched the David Copperfield show in Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena - the same venue of Australian Open Tennis.

I was given 2 free tickets worth $200 each so that I can give a review of the show.

First thing I want to say is that I am a big fan of magic and bigger fan of David Copperfield, so hopefully this review isn’t too bias.

Ok, on with the review. The show started at around 8tish and finished about 9:45. The last time David Copperfield was here was about 10 years ago and I have to say, he still has that aura about him.

Like all his other shows, the magic gives maximum WOW factor! Without totally spoiling it for you guys, some of the tricks include making a car appear mid air, reading the crowds mind, making a group of spectators dissapear and re-appear, a talking red tie and walking through an industrial fan! He even had some fun with with a duck. I found myself trying to figure out how each trick was done after each performance :)

The show was really relaxed and quite funny, I actually think David Copperfield would make a good stand up comedian. There were lots of interaction with the crowd, so if you are sitting in the front seats there is a good chance that you will be part of the show!

All in all the show was great fun. I highly recommend it, definitely a great family outing. The only thing I’d wish for is if the show went a little longer.  It went for over an hour an a half but time really flew!

Fashionistas fans, the outfit I was wearing were from Veronika Maine and Sass and Bide.

We actually paid over $200 a ticket and felt disappointed it was so short. Ours was only around 1.5 hours. I believe a lot of people stood up and didn’t want to leave cause they thought he would come back. Would you recommend this for a family of four at $200 a ticket?

He didn’t do any of the great tricks he done here previously and I was waiting for the flying one!

I would be interested to know what lottery numbers he had the audience come up with at your show. Was there a brown boxers in that?

Me thinks that cassette tape was set to record rather than play if the numbers were truly random :)

I heard the show was great. Some friends of mine took me through every trick after the show, made me want to go, is it too late? I heard probably only two shows right?

Too short for $250 for Gold Ticket. Bought tickets as a treat my parents (Mum was a massive fan back then) through showbiz which sold the gold tickets for $139 which wasn’t so bad. For $250 you do expect like a 2+ hour show like what a concert offers.

Unfortunately if you’re after a David Copperfield Show in Melbourne, He only had 2 shows Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August 2009. I am not actually sure whether he had a show on Sunday. As I was approached for my free ticket, I was after the Sunday show but was told it may not happen. He’s great - I love him :)

You guys are probably right, it was probably too short for the cost, but then again its David Copperfield. You probably wont ever see him again in Australia, although another 30 or so minutes would have made it perfect!

Lottery numbers? Paper bag?? Not sure which show that was, Adelaide, Sydney?? With the Melbourne show he threw out a frisbee to select audience members at random, those people then selected any 2 numbers at random and also answered a question about themselves, quite funny that bit

A fair comment - it made me think what would my reaction be when I had to fork out $200 for an express Mr Copperfield show instead of getting a free ticket for that….hmmm….

    Mai,

I was at the exact same show u went to. Are u sure it went from 8ish-9:45?? Coz I’m pretty sure it went from 7:30 to around 8:45, maybe till 9 max. My point is that it is false advertising…I mean the show finished a full 30-45 minutes earlier than it was scheduled to! I bought a bronze ticket for $116.40. What a rip-off!! ‘Why?’ u may ask? Read on…

I could not believe we paid to watch videos of him on monitors performing old great feats such as hanging upside down on a burning rope while bound in a straight jacket…at the start we were even shown endless clips referring to David in pop culture etc. What was the point of this?? we had to be reminded that this was the man who had made the Statue of Liberty disappear, who walked through the Great Wall of China…but, let’s hold on one minute…contrast this with David putting a duck in a bucket and making it disappear…thats fine for a small trick in front of a small group of people…but at Rod Raver Arena??? Come on David! He then gets someone from the crowd who was obviously in on it to call out: “Do it in slow motion…You can do it!” (or something to that effect)…Keeping in mind that there were families that paid more than $1000 to him… some even flew in from interstate!

While I’ll grant him that some of the illusions he did were pretty cool, such as that involving the car, the motorbike and the block of steel, could you honestly say you felt like you were watching the ‘Greatest Illusionist in the World’? The fan illusion was an old one as well…browse through youtube and you will find heaps of awesome old clips of David. It pains me to say this, because I watched him on tv as a teen and thought it would be great to see him live, but he not only let me down, but all of his fans. We expected so much more!

Am I being harsh? Check out these reviews:

Every single one is a bad review. Are these people all wrong in feeling cheated? It looks like I’m not the only one…If it was just the duration of the show that was the problem I would give him the benefit of the doubt. But it was the overall poor choice of the illusions performed…as well as David focusing too much on humour than grand scale magic…all adding to a very lacklustre event. Some who might not know what David is capable of (and he is capable of SO much better) will be alot more forgiving. But I tell it like it is. Everyone was duped, and the only fair thing really is for them to get their money back (either that or at least 20-30% back).

I totally agree with all of the negative points above. Mai Lin, I think you need to re-evaluate your reviews and your perception, this is a family event and in no way was it appropriate. Especially given the ‘fuckit’ comments in regards of the key for the car trick (Adelaide show). Almost everything during the show was a setup, and it not only felt entirely rehearsed it felt like he didn’t even want to be there. There was hardly any mystery and a majority of it was full of sexually oriented ‘lame’ jokes. The major thing that really let this show down was his obnoxious videos, especially the introduction with everything just saying ‘how good I am’. We knew David was a good magician, but no longer. He had some class and something swauve about him but this is lost amongst the cocky attitude.

“I found myself trying to figure out how each trick was done after each performance” maybe for a single, simply minded individual like you this would amuse you. All of these ‘tricks’ have been done before and are outdated - you tell me, what was original and new?

“he still has that aura about him” what aura? The sense that he was an arrogant man with bad fashion taste, and now he is an arrogant wrinkled old man STILL with bad fashion taste.

“there is a good chance that you will be part of the show” IF you happen to be one of his rehearsed planted crewmen.

“The only thing I’d wish for is if the show went a little longer” The only thing I can agree with you on.

Seriously, If I wanted to watch these outdated deceptive maneuvers then I could go to youtube. If I wanted to lose $200 I could just as easily go to the Casino and gamble it away. Either way each of these would have lasted longer than this show and most undoubtedly I would have had more fun.

Wow ha ha, people seriously need to either lighten up or think carefully about how they spend their money if that’s their major gripe. Even though we knew what to expect, we were still wide eyed and impressed by his tricks. The humour was fine for us, a light hearted event :) - chillax

Pete, you are missing the point. The major gripe is not the money. Again, I direct you to check out the comments posted on:

    http://www.liveguide.com.au/Forums/tabid/98/forumid/11/tpage/2/view/Topic/

The consensus is that the show itself was a real let down. People flew from Tasmania and other places to check out this show. If you read the comments you will see that ALL (not some) people who commented about the show were not ‘wide-eyed and impressed’ as you were.

Out of curiosity I visited the David Copperfield Forum on his official website. There they supposedly encourage reviews of the shows. However, when I commented on the show being way shorter than advertised and not living up to expectations, they removed my posts. When I reposted my comments they had me banned. How ridiculous is that! Several other people said they had the same thing happen when they had been critical of the shows. Again, I emphasize, I did not use obscenities or anything of that nature to warrant me getting banned. What is the point of having such a forum in the first place if people’s views are going to be censored like that?

  11. Squizz said on October 22nd, 2009 at 8:30 am

oohhhh that censorship is a bit wrong, don’t appreciate that much at all. My friends are fairly capable of having fun at anything, lived around the corner and had the tickets given to them as a gift so the circumstances made things easy for them to enjoy. Sounds like Mai Lin was probably in a similar frame of mind. If I’d flown down from Tasmania and forked out the dollars however…

I have to agree with all of the comments above. We went to see him in Victoria (very small venue here) while in Canada this summer and it was such an incredible disappointment. The video montage that went on and on and seemed nothing more than an ego trip for the man. Then once he began to talk, he was rambling in a rapid monotone, that my husband and I wondered whether he was on drugs, going through the motions or both? I hope we helped him pay whatever bills he had to cover with these “performances”.
