Komodo Island - Day 2 (komodo island or Loh Liang)

After a night of sleeping on the rooftop of a boat I woke up and had breakfast. We sailed for a further 2 hours and finally reached Komodo Island.
There are 2 main islands in Indonesia where you can see the majority of the Komodo Dragons - Rinca Island (Loh Buaya), which we just did and and Komodo Island (Loh Liang). On Rinca Island I had the experience of my life, witnessing a pack of Komodo Dragons feeding on a water buffalo.
So today the pressure is off. You know how when you go on wildlife trips there is always the chance that it comes up short. But after yesterdays experience, its all good. In saying that I was still excited to see more Komodo Dragons. There are 3 main trekking areas on Komodo Island - short, medium, long. We decided to choose the medium one. I got an English speaking guide who explained the island’s circle of life and some facts about it.
One thing you guys are probably still wondering is how on earth we get so close to these lizards. They can outrun most humans so you’d think getting too close isn’t such a good idea. Well, thats what the guides are there for! and their weapon of choice? a forked stick!! Apparently, komodo dragons are scared of these sticks. The locals told me, they just need to point the stick at the dragon, and it will leave you alone. Good enough I guess
The best way to get close to Komodo Dragons without being bitten is not to stand directly right in front of it. Its best to see them on at least a 45 degree angle, preferably from behind.
I managed to see more komodo dragons and the trekking sceneries are simply amazing.
After trekking, I got taken to snorkle at a place called the Red Beach. I had a good time snorkling here where I saw abundant of fish and corals. Although it was not as colourful as The Great Barrier Reef in Queensland (Australia) which I’ve been some years ago, it is still comparable in terms of the volume of fish you get to swim with :).
