Mai at Labuhan Bajo - feasting on local delicacies before experiencing an earth quake that night
After 2 days on a boat exploring the islands of of Komodo and Rinca for komodo dragons, I was finally back on dry land at Indonesia’s island of Flores. I was staying overnight at a little town in West Flores called Labuhan Bajo. This town has nothing much other than simple local life and is a launching pad for travellers exploring Komodo Island.
The locals told us that Hollywood’s coming in a month time to make a movie here. So keep an eye on this :).
While in Labuhan Bajo, I decided to see the local life by walking downhill to the water. I decided to try some local delicacies. One thing we ate looked like noodle soup with meatballs called Bakso. It has a nice broth.
Another local delicacy I tried was a REALLY SWEET drink called Es Teler. I didn’t really enjoy this as it was really sweet, it made me feel sick! The drink contained thick honey, condensed milk, some jellies, pink cordial, slices of young coconuts, ice with sprinkler of salty nuts on the top.
Earth Quake
I stayed at a hotel called Hotel Golo Hilltop. As the name suggests it is right at the top of the hill with beautiful views of the sea. At 4am, on the first night I experienced my first EARTHQUAKE! At first I wasn’t sure what was happening as firstly I was still half asleep and also I don’t think Ive ever experienced an earthquake before. Anyway the noise and rocking got louder and harder, before long I was yelling EARTHQUAKE! My 2 other travell companions both jumped and 1 ran out with me while the other one kept sleeping (What an idiot! Yes you know who you are). While it’s not something I want to experience again it was a interesting experience nonetheless!
In the morning I found out that the cause of the earthquake/tremor was a nearby island called Sumbawa. I was told the earthquake in Sumbawa island measured 6 on the richter scale.
That morning before we caught a flight back to Bali, we visited The Mirror Cave. The cave was discovered by the Dutch. As what the name suggests, when the sun shines during the day, the cave wall lit up. We saw some bats and massive spiders.
