Komodo Island - Komodo dragons feeding on buffalo

Mai got to experience Komodo Dragons feeding a water buffalo on their natural habitat - not even BBC TV Crew nor Steve Irwin got to witness :)
I thought the komodo dragon killing needed its own seperate post :), so here it is.
As mentioned by our guide, seeing a fresh buffalo kill is rare. The favourite food of the komodo dragon is deer and most the time the kill is hidden in the dense forrest, out of the sight of eager tourists. So you can imagine how excited I was. What made it even more awesome was the kill was done at the edge of a small river bank and if you look at the photo above, there was a rock ledge that we can get on to and see these magnificent animals at very close quarters without the fear of being eaten yourself
It really was a sight to behold, such a privilege.
I mentioned this before, not even the BBC TV crew or the late Steve Irwin (Australian wildlife hero/crocodiles wrestler) himself managed to see what we saw. BBC and Steve Irwin had to stimulate this feeding by hanging a chicken or a goat instead.
For those who aren’t familiar with the way the komodo dragons hunt, their weapon of choice is their poisonous/bateria infected saliva. The komodos will lay still, camouflaged by its surrounding. Then when an unsuspecting prey approaches while feeding they will leap towards them and bite them with their sharp serrated teeth. The prey will likley run away but as it is infected it will slowly die. With their keen sense of smell the dragons can sense this and will find the prey and gorge themselves.
Anyhow, I’ll let my photos speak for themselves. Enjoy!
For more animals feeding on their natural habitat - visit my posting on Lions feeding an eland (Serengeti National Park) at my East Africa safari trip :). Yes, I seem to attract animals during feeding time…
