New Magnum Sandwich VS Maxibon
9 Comments December 21, 2009 / Posted in Food & Wine, ReviewsOk, so the other day I craved for some ice cream so I went to the local 7/11 store. Usually I would get the Gaytime but this time I want to try the new Magnum Sandwich. For those of you who don’t know what a Magnum Sandwich is, its basically a Maxibon look-alike.
So for those who are thinking if they should get a Magnum Sandwich or a Maxibon, here is my review
Streets VS Peters
Magnum has recently branched out with a new ice cream that breaks the traditional shape and flavour of its well known line. The Magnum Sandwich is clearly Street’s version of Peter’s Maxibon which is a 2 piece hybrid ice-cream. The ice creams are half chocolate coated ice cream and half biscuit sandwiched ice-cream.
Wrapped

The Magnum Sandwich has a wrapper that is similar in size and appearance to the rest of their line. Side by side, in their wrapper, the Maxibon’s wrapper is larger and upon inspection, there is seems to be more room for the ice cream to move here then the Magnum Sandwich which has a wrapper more tightly sized to its shape.
In terms of weight, there is only a gram between them with 98 grams for the Magnum and 99 grams for the Maxibon.
Magnum made a point of proudly announcing on the wrapper that it is “with almonds”!
Unwrapped

Despite the measly 1 gram difference between the two ice creams the Maxibon’s square, sharper edged shaped gives it a bulkier appearance. The magnum is more rounded.
The Magnum chocolate and biscuit appears darker in color then the Maxibon and also looks as though it may have more nuts.
The Ice cream inside the magnum is very white whereas the Maxibon ice cream seems creamier looking and yellow with the addition of the choc sprinkles. It seems that there is a distinct differences in their ice-cream content. Also important to note is the texture of the Maxibon, along with its creamy colour is the creamy consistency which means the ice cream melts relatively more quickly and has a hard time keeping its shape and is generally messy. The Magnum ice cream on the other hand looks more solid and retains the shape of the sandwich.
Now for the taste test!
Taste Test
Chocolate Coated Ice-cream 1/2

Okay! The appearance of the ice creams side by side gave a lot away. The Maxibon ice cream is far creamier and rich with the choc sprinkles then the Magnum ice cream. The Magnum ice cream has a cleaner ice cream taste. The same applies to the chocolate coating on the ice cream. After all, from the early days of Magnum Ice cream introduction, the selling point in adverts was the way the thick chocolate shell snapped and cracked under the pressure of the hot models teeth.
The Magnum Sandwich chocolate coating has a darker chocolate taste then the Maxibon ice cream. The nuts of the Maxibon appear to be “nuttier” somehow then the Magnum, with Almonds that are a more subtle in punch and again, less impressive then the almonds from the usual Magnum range.
Biscuit Sandwich 1/2
Now I know why Magnum called this Ice-cream the Magnum Sandwich, because THIS is the part of the ice-cream that really shines. As I already mentioned, unlike the Maxibon, the ice-cream of the Magnum keeps its shape, so eating the Sandwich is already a more pleasant experience. As for the taste and texture, I could not have asked for more. Sorry Nestle, but this is exactly how I remembered our beloved Monaco bar of the 80’s, not the resurrected Monaco bar of last year.
The biscuit is the perfect softness so that your teeth sink through the biscuit and ice cream in a smooth transition without the biscuit being soggy so it retains its integrity. There is a less subtle flavour in the biscuit and the only change I would consider making would be more of that ginger biscuit flavour.
Overall
A good job here with the Magnum Sandwich Streets. Initially, the chocolate coated ice-cream half makes one draw comparisons with the usual high standard of Magnum Ice-cream and chocolate. Then that same ice-cream is combined with the biscuit and all notions of Magnum ice-cream are thrown out the window because there is something new here. This half is so good I think Streets could have really taken the gold if they’d released this ice-cream with jus the biscuit sandwiched ice-cream alone, the Monaco bar truly resurrected if you will.
Would I buy it again? Yes I would. Though I wish it wasn’t a half- half affair the chocolate coated ice-cream is still delicious before I hit the jacket pot biscuit sandwich.
Is it better then the Maxibon? I think each ice-cream will cater to two distinct tastes. The Maxibon would be more suited to children or those who prefer their ice-cream creamier and sweeter. The Magnum is more of an ice-cream perhaps for the adult and one a parent might hide from the kids.

I’m a big fan of good indepth reviews well done, I tried the magnum ice-cream and I agree with what you’re saying. The Magnum trumps the Maxibon for me and was very disappointed by the re-release of the Monaco bar. Remember the original packaging of the Monaco bar? It was perfect.
After reading your review and being a maxibon fan for many years I decided to try out this new magnum sandwich. The magnum seams to hold well compared to a maxibon I think the biggest difference for me was the way the chocolate tasted. I think your review was spot on when you mentioned “The Magnum is more of an ice-cream perhaps for the adult and one a parent might hide from the kids”,
I prefer the chocolate taste of the maxibon it’s just your conventional tasting chocolate. The magnium chocolate was more richer almost darker tasting.
i think the maxibon is much better then the magnum. the magnum just tastes absoulutly disgusting!
the maxibon is delisious the magnum just doesnt satisfy my love for icecream
lol absolutely disgusting - wow. That’s a bit Rich. You know what else is too Rich. The Maxibon. Spew!
I tried the Streets Sandwhich and I had to throw it out halfway. Very disappointed with the taste and texture. Anyway, I gave it a go and I still prefer Maxibon. By the way, i ALSO absolutely love the Monaco Bar and my friends and I practically have it as our staple diet! : )
Clearly you Streets lovers don’t know your icecream… of course Streets’ attempt at the Maxibon is going to be a reasonable one… they have something already fantastic to compare it to… however, the attempt is pretty pathetic in comparison to Peters Maxibon. Maxibon is and will always be the ‘original’ AND the best.
Well if you love the Monaco bar and it’s your staple diet then of course you’ll love the Maxibon. They’re both a fat persons carrot. I find it very hard to believe you would eat only half. Lie. Didn’t even say which half?
