I don’t usually review restaurants outside of Melbourne but for those who likes Japanese food there is really no equal for value and taste.

I am talking about Samurai. Samurai is one of the oldest and authentic Japanese restaurant outside Melbourne. It has been around for more than 10 years. The place is alway busy but for some reason are yet to open a second shop.

Samurai is located in Melbourne suburb of Hawthorn. To get there by public transport, you can catch a tram or catch a train to the Glenferrie station.

I love the sushi/sashimi dish which only cost a mere $12.50. It’s soo fresh and certainly value for money.

If you fancy a hot dish, my favourite is the Chicken Katsu Don. Chicken Fillet crummbed and fried, served in onion and egg sauce with rice. Another value for money, only a mere $7.

During the weekdays, Samurai does a lunch special where you can get a main dish with miso soup or drink for a special price.

Be warned though that while its the best value/taste combo it will definitely not be the best restaurant experience you’ll ever have. It can be crowded and noisy. Sometimes, especially during lunch time they will rush you, which is fair enough since the food so good and people are cueing outside.

Having said that, I can tell you if I were to live nearby I would be eating at Samurai at least 3 times a week :)

    Hi
Just letting you know that the chicken katsu don definately does not look authentic at all from the photo, I wouldn’t have even known it’ a chicken katsu don unless you wrote it! Sorry, I just HATE restaurants that pretent to be authentic Japanese when it’s not, it’s deceiving and I dont want ppl thinking that’s what Japanese food really is. ‘Don’ comes from the word donburi, which means bowl.. so firstly, this needs to be in a bowl with the rice and the chicken katsu (schnitzel) on top.
