Like most Melburnians and Sydney Syders I like to compare the 2 cities. I have lived in both long enough to say which is the better city
No I will not make this announcement in this post, rather I will compare the sushi trains of the 2 cities.
A lot of people tell me that food in Sydney is a lot more expensive, however I don’t tend to agree with this totally, yes while somes may be more expensive but many are not. For example, some asian foods are actually cheaper in Sydney than in Melbourne, another is Sushi trains – the topic of this post.
In Melbourne the 2 most well known sushi trains are Tomodachi (in Melbourne Central) and Go Go Sushi in Swanston Street (between Lonsdale St and Bourke St). They are great and I frequently go there for my sushi fix, but one thing they are not is cheap, in fact they are both quite expensive, you can expect two people to eat at least $25/person with drinks.
In Sydney I found an affordable and quality sushi train called Sushi Rio. I walked past Sushi Rio often and the place is always packed. I decided to give it a try and was very impressed with the varities of sushi being served on the sushi train conveyer belt. The bonus is that the chefs that are making your sushis are Japanese. Now I don’t want to be controversial here but, I’ve always preferred Japanese chefs when I’m eating sushi as oppose to the myriad of chinese ones.
As I walked in, I was greeted in Japanese. The sushis on the conveyer belt are grouped by shellfish, salmon, tuna, chicken, pork, vegetarians, desserts, etc. You also have the option to order food off the menu if you don’t see your favourite dish being served on the belt.
After feasting on all those for 2 people including soft drinks I ended up paying only $20/person which was bargain!
To give you an idea, the price of the individual plate:
- $2.50 (Think of basic sushi rolls filled with pickles, seaweed salad, tamago/egg sushi rolls, cucumbers, california rolls)
- $3 (Think of salmon or tuna nigiri sushi)
- $3.50 (Salmon Belly Fat Nigiri, Scallops nigiri)
- Tempura Prawn Nigiri ($3.50) BARGAIN!
- Roast Beef (Beef Tataki) Nigiri Sushi
- Lightly charred scallop Nigiri Sushi
- Chicken Karaage ($5.50)
- Cuttle Fish and fish roe nigiri sushi
- Salmon and Avocado Sushi Rolls
- Salmon and Kingfish Sashimi
- Scallop Sashimi with ponzu dressings
- Seaweed Salad
- Mai’s favourite – Tamago Nigiri Sushi
- Teriyaki Chicken Sushi
- Tuna Nigiri Sushi
- Topshell Nigiri with caviar
- Fresh Lingoustine Nigiri
- Salmon Hand Roll
