My favourite piper warrior training plane with a call sign PZH

One of my favourite hobby is flying. When I first started to learn how to fly, it was a single engine, Cessna 172. However I am now currently flying a bigger plane – Piper Warrior PA 28 -161. This plane is a lot bigger and more comfortable than the Cessna. The other difference is it’s a low wings plane as opposed to the high wings Cessna. I personally prefer flying the Piper than Cessna. The bigger the better :) . I am very close to flying my first solo, the only thing holding me back at the moment is sitting for the pre-solo test.

Quick facts about the Piper Warrior PA 28 -161-

  • four seaters Piper Warrior PA 28 – 161 (fixed gear landing)
  • four cylinders with carburettor
  • 160 hp (119 kW)
  • gross weight 1107 kg

Wow, what a beautiful looking plane! Congratulations on learning how to fly. I once went for a trial flight lesson in Sunbury and absolutely loved it. I would love to learn one day but it is quite a distance to travel and costly too. How long have you been learning to fly now and how much did that plane cost? If you don’t mind me asking.

    Hi Hung,

Thank you very much. This is my 14th hours of flying. I hire the plane for training. The plane itself does not cost much as you can purchase one for the cost of a car (approximately $80,000 second hand depending on the number of hours it’s flown and make year). The service cost is the expensive one as there are not many engineers to service plane so they can charge whatever they feel like. Some of us in the club were thinking of buying a twin engine plane from US as our AUD is so strong against USD. The cost of getting your PPL (Private Pilot License) is the same cost of you doing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree. The difference is obtaining a PPL is so much fun than sitting in a classroom :) and it took half the time of you completing your MBA. You will be earning a long life skill and many adventures to come :) .

    Heya Mai,
I flew in VH-RQM yesterday and it was my first lesson.
I’m an ex Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (10 years ago) and thought it’s time that I took to the skies.
Anyway, thought I’d write a note to say hi and might see you around at the club.
    Kind regards and happy flying,
    Shehaan.

    Hi Shehann,

Really glad that you say hi :) . How was your first lesson? Who’s your Flight Instructor? RQM happens to be my favourite plane :) . I also like TPW :) . In fact I love all the Warriors :) . I’ve completed my third solo and have booked in for my BAK theory this weekend. I guess I’ll see you around the club. x Mai

It was good and was on a really busy day (Young Eagles was on). I had booked Matt Rayson, but was double booked so went with Robert.
I’m booked in with Matt this Saturday @1230 and hopefully have another Warrior available (though I wouldn’t mind taking the Aero or the Cirrus out).
Good luck with your BAK this weekend and it sounds like you pass with flying colours ;o)
    Ciao…. Shez.

Hi Shehaan, I went to Tooradin and did circuit there as I knew Moorabin was busy due to the Young Eagles. It sounds awesome that you will have a lesson with Matt. He’s a really good instructor :) . I have never had a lesson with him but I know him very well. I studied BAK by myself but plan to join Matt’s PPL theory lesson (he has a company called Ground Effect Aviation that teaches theory). I’m contemplating whether I should do CPL theory or PPL (depends how much study I want to do :) ). I might just stick with PPL theory. Happy Flying Shehaan…the weather this week is going to be awesome :) !! Hope there’ll be a bit of wind though…flying in a nil wind causes our plane to float all the time :) . x Mai

I didn’t you know you could go to another airport and hire their planes for ‘practice’, but then again I’m a long way from going solo. (I just got my ARN yesterday). I’ve heard very good things about him and we’ll see on Saturday. I will need to self study as my work keeps me on the road and in the air quite a bit :o )
I’m contemplating the same thing and keep reverting back to just getting my PPL and flying away somewhere for the weekend with my family.
The weather is good and ‘floating’ is not something I’m familiar with, but am confident Matt will englighten me.
Chat soon and see you around.
